(1987) Study of common bile duct exploration and endoscopic sphincterotomy in a consecutive series of 438 patients. (1988) Surgical versus endoscopic management of common bile duct stones. cholangiography and stone removal prior to cholecystectomy. Reduction of transmural oesophageal variceal pressure by metoclopramide. In nineteen patients with portal hypertension and oesophageal varices, transmural variceal blood pressure was determined endoscopically by direct puncture of the varices before and after intravenous administration of 20 mg metoclopramide or placebo. No change in pressure was observed after placebo (mean difference-1.3 _ _. 24.5%, N.S.), however, metociopramide reduced the pressure by 17.6 _+ 18.6% (p 0.02). Our results suggest that metociopramide may be beneficial for the prevention of treatment of variceal haemorrhage.

Pharmacological constriction of the lower oesophageal sphincter: a simple method of arresting variceal haemorrhage.
The effect of pharmacological constriction of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) on oesophageal varices was investigated in an experimental study followed by a controlled clinical trial. In the experimental study intravariceal pressure was measured just above the LOS in 11 patients before and after constricting the LOS by intravenous pentagastrin. Intravariceal pressure fell from a mean of 2...
متن کاملRole of dopamine in the regulation of blood pressure and the renin--angiotensin--aldosterone system in conscious rats.
1. In conscious rats, intracerebroventricular injection of dopamine resulted in a decrease in blood pressure, whereas injection of metoclopramide, the dopamine antagonist, produced an increase in blood pressure. The central depressor effect of dopamine was attenuated by a subpressor pretreatment with intraventricular metoclopramide, but not by phentolamine. 2. Intravenous administration of dopa...
متن کاملEffect of intravenous metoclopramide on intraocular pressure: a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
BACKGROUND Prevention of rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) is essential in patients undergoing surgery for perforated eye injuries. Metoclopramide, a prokinetic agent, is commonly used to hasten gastric emptying in emergency surgeries. AIM To study the change in IOP after intravenous metoclopramide and to study the influence of metoclopramide on change in IOP after succinylcholine and trache...
متن کاملStoma-related Variceal Bleeding: An Under-Recognized Complication of Biliary Atresia.
The medical records of 52 children with biliary atresia treated by portoenterostomy and evaluated for liver transplantation were reviewed to determine the frequency of stoma variceal bleeding and the optimal strategies for prevention and treatment. Eighteen patients had had prior stoma closure, four by preperitoneal closure without takedown from the abdominal wall. Three of the four developed o...
متن کاملPortal hypertension: pre-primary and primary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding.
In liver cirrhosis, variceal bleeding is the last in a chain of events initiated by the increase in portal pressure (estimated in clinical practice by the hepatic venous pressure gradient). When hepatic venous pressure gradient goes above 10 mmHg the patient is at risk of developing varices, and when hepatic venous pressure gradient reaches 12 mmHg variceal bleeding might develop. Currently, th...
